Tobermory, Canada
Lake Huron Shipwreck Dives

August 19th and 20th, 2006

Past Trip Report

This was a terrific Sold out trip!  The Weather was perfect for the first day of diving and not so good for the second day but we still got three dives in both days and the weekend was fantastic.   The Teak Isle is still one of the coolest dive boats around with tons of space and a great dive platform.

The weekend started with a dive on the wreck of the Forest City.  Some people were participating in the PADI Tec Deep Course and this was the perfect opportunity to deep dive.  Most everyone had an opportunity to see the wreck because of the profile of the site.   The wreck comes to within 60 feet of the surface and there is a lot of wreckage shallower than that even.

The second dive of the weekend was the King.  This wreck is another one where you can pick the depth you are most comfortable in.   At a severe incline the wreck starts at 80' and comes to within 15 feet of the surface.  Lots to see in the area and lots of really neat artifacts in the shallows.

The last dive of Saturday we did the Wetmore.  This is one of the favorite sites in the Tobermory area since there is so much to see over a large area.   The depth is rarely deeper than 30'  but the wreckage has a number of  Artifacts in among it that make the exploration super fun.

After diving Captain Scott and Tara took us to the Tobermory Lodge by boat for food and drinks and a trip over the wreck of the Sweepstakes which we could see from the surface.

The next day was really windy and rough.  We had to stay in the sheltered coves but there were wrecks to dive there.   The Sweepstakes and City of Grand Rapids are local favorites and we had a boat dive on the Tugs in Little Tub Harbor.    Having never seen the tugs a number of divers were pretty pleased with the condition and the fact that we were able to dive.

After lunch the weather settled a bit and we went and did a geological dive on the south side of doctor island.  Although the shipwrecks are the primary interest in the Fathom Five Provincial Park,  The Natural formations of this area should not be discounted as a dive worth doing.   There are a ton of incredible rock formations and glacial groves that, along with great visibility make for some spectacular diving.

Every year we look forward to our trip to Tobermory.   Hope you can join us next year for this fantastic trip.
