PADI National Geographic Open Water Diver Package
Five Session Traditional Program (for a faster way to complete this course click here)

The PADI National Geographic Open Water Diver Course is a complete course taking you from never knowing anything about diving to becoming a PADI National Geographic Open Water Diver.  Divers Incorporated in Ann Arbor, Michigan offers the complete package, with "No Hidden Fees" and makes sure that you are having fun every step of the way.

The PADI National Geographic Open Water Diver Course is designed for people who do better with guidance or have been away from studying for a while. This course is designed so each week corresponds with a chapter that can be completed in a timely manner within the normal schedule of your life.  When we schedule a course one night per week,  it gives you an opportunity to "have something come up at work" or  to "run-a-little-late."   If you miss a day or need extra help on one of the lessons,  we are able to schedule a time for make-ups.   The longer schedule format also allows you the opportunity to understand the knowledge development sections and gives you more time for practice during the pool sessions.

Open Water Certification

The Pool and the classroom portions of this course are only the beginning. To complete your certification you must complete dives in an Open Water setting. Typically your open water certification dive will be scheduled as soon as it is possible after the pool and classroom portions of this program. Regardless of how you plan on completing the certification dives you will have six months to complete the required Open Water Certification without retraining. This certification consists of Six Dives including Four open water training dives and two National Geographic Project Dives over a two-day period. You will need to purchase gloves, and a hood appropriate to the environment where you will be diving and you must have a timing device which is included in your rental for the National Geographic dives. Ask your instructor for details. The Adventure Diver course, Advanced Open water, the Enriched air diver course are scheduled at your convenience. Ask your instructor for details.

PADI Enriched Air Certification

As you progress through your course you will learn more about the advantages of diving with Enriched Air. The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is our most popular specialty scuba diving course, and it’s easy to see why. Scuba diving with enriched air nitrox gives you more no decompression dive time. This means more time underwater, especially on repetitive scuba dives.  The best part is that you can typically stay down longer and get back the water sooner. Since many divers choose this as their very first specialty course, this package includes it.  You just need to complete some additional homework and have an evening with your instructor prior to your open water certification dives.  Your dive number 4 and your National Geographic dives can all be completed using Enriched Air.

Additional Requirements

A $349.00 deposit is required for class registration. The deposit is transferable until two weeks prior to the start of class. Full payment for the course is due the first night of class. There is a maximum of eight Students per instructor to provide better service and attention.  If you are enrolled in a different program you can "upgrade" any time before the end of

Students must supply their own snorkeling equipment prior to their first class session. This equipment should be properly fitted and will become your most personal dive gear.  We can help you choose something appropriate during your orientation session.  This equipment will include: Mask, Fins, Boots (if open heel fins are used), and a Snorkel. These are all available from Divers Incorporated. For your open water weekend you need to purchase gloves and purchase or rent a hood and timing device. Your instructor will explain the equipment requirements during your class sessions.

Since you may not know exactly which equipment would work best for you, we understand that you are trusting the staff of Divers Incorporated to fit you properly with equipment that will work for you in all your diving needs.  To this end, we offer you an extended version of our exclusive “First Dive Guarantee.”  If for any reason you are not happy with your choice of equipment purchased from Divers Incorporated during your course, you can exchange it for something more suitable to your needs that we currently carry.

PADI National Geographic Diver Project

Through the  PADI National Geographic Diver Project component of the course, you join an elite group of explorers, adventurers and conservationists. The insight and training you gain during this program will broaden your awareness and take your diving skills to a new level. You'll learn to observe and explore like an underwater scientist. You will learn to explore with detail, identify important underwater features and navigate with certainty. You will have the diving knowledge and practice to maneuver with poise along the reef’s ecosystems.

The National Geographic Diver Program was developed to complement and integrate with the PADI Open Water Diver course. However, there are components unique to the National Geographic Diver Program. These are:

bullet

Fine-tuning buoyancy control. Building on what you learned in the pool, you will  learn methods of observing aquatic life by maneuvering and balancing yourself in the water more efficiently and effectively.

bullet

Completing an exploration project. During this hands-on project, you will gather information and/or images and create a visual representation (such as a sketch, diagram, graph, photo essay or video) of the dive site that details specific features. The project is adaptable to regional environments, as well your  interests and the interests of your instructor. It could be as simple as examining a single coral head and sketching its structure and resident creatures or as elaborate as creating an edited video complete with narration detailing the exploration of a site. - Past Photo Projects

bullet

Completing a navigational assignment (squares or rectangles using compass and natural references) Keen navigational skills are a challenge and a pleasure to acquire. They go hand in hand with learning about underwater topography, as well as with the National Geographic Diver exploration project.

bullet

OR Completing an identification assignment (which involves locating and identifying plants and animals). Keen navigational skills are a challenge and a pleasure to acquire, however,  Aquatic life identification provides a perfect alternative when logistics do not provide for practical navigation practice. By identifying aquatic life, National Geographic Divers increase awareness of biological diversity in the underwater world.

bullet

Credit for PADI Continuing Education Courses - Once you have completed the your PADI National Geographic Diver Certification, your experience as a National Geographic Diver can be credited towards future courses.   The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course, The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty,  the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty and the PADI Underwater Photography specialty will, in most cases, allow you to credit your diving experiences towards those certifications depending on the skills you do during your Project.

Since you will get the National Geographic Diver Crew-Pak at enrollment, the exploration project can be planned at any time during the Open Water Diver course, but typically it is added as an additional evening. The National Geographic Diver open water assignments are scheduled as additional dives beyond those required for the Open Water Diver Certification. This enhances the experience by devoting time specifically to National Geographic dive requirements and by giving you more time in the water with your PADI Open Water Instructor.

We look forward to diving with you. If you have questions give us a call at (734) 971 7770, email us, or check out our Frequently Asked Questions Page for more information.
