PADI National Geographic Specialty

Most PADI Divers are fascinated with the aquatic world, which inspires them to learn more. Because you have already learned the theory and skills of diving, the National Geographic Specialty gives certified divers the opportunity to build on your dive experience to learn about new adventures, exploration and conservation opportunities.

The National Geographic Specialty  will help you take your dive experiences to a new level. How? You’ll learn more about the world’s oceans, lakes,  and waterways and discover details that will enhance your personal dive adventures. During the National Geographic Specialty Course you will be:

  • Fine-tuning buoyancy control. Building on what you learned in the pool, you will  learn methods of observing aquatic life by maneuvering and balancing yourself in the water more efficiently and effectively.

  • Completing an exploration project. During the National Geographic Specialty, you’ll take your exploration skills to an advanced level by collecting data to construct a visual representation of what you explored. This project may result in a map, graph, sketch, diagram, photo essay or video. You, your fellow explorers and your instructor will decide on your area of focus and plan your dive accordingly. You’ll also gain navigational skills that will aid in the exploration process. Your exploration skills will give you a new appreciation for the aquatic environment and add enjoyment to each dive. You’ll find yourself sharing your discoveries with other divers and becoming a true underwater ambassador.

  • Completing a navigational assignment (squares or rectangles using compass and natural references) Keen navigational skills are a challenge and a pleasure to acquire. They go hand in hand with learning about underwater topography, as well as with the National Geographic Diver exploration project.

  • OR Completing a identification assignment (which involves locating and identifying plants and animals). In places  where navigation is not much of a challenge, Aquatic life identification provides a perfect alternative. By identifying aquatic life, National Geographic Divers increase awareness of biological diversity in the underwater world.

Whether you are a certified PADI Diver or certified by another organization, you can take advantage of the National Geographic Portal. The National Geographic Specialty consists of a knowledge review based on information from the National Geographic Diver Almanac and DVD. You will have an opportunity to explore the underwater world and create something to share with others. Your PADI National Geographic dives can even count towards your PADI Advanced Open Water Certification.  To start your National Geographic adventure, visit Divers Incorporated today.
