The S. S. Willis B. Boyer (formerly the Col. James M. Schoonmaker) was built
in 1911 and “retired” in 1980 after 69 years of service. For many of these
years it ruled as “queen of the lake freighters.” The ship is 617 feet long
(more than two football fields laid end to end), 64 feet wide, and has a bulk
cargo capacity of 15,000 tons - the ship itself weighs nearly 10,000 tons.
Careful, authentic restoration has made the ship come alive! Memorabilia,
photography, and artifacts maintained and displayed by the Western Lake Erie
Historical Society are all part of this nautical museum.

Although it is a
museum not a "Local Dive," The Boyer offers
all who visit the unique opportunity to experience the shipping lifestyle in a
hands-on setting. As one of a few of its kind remaining, the Boyer will charm
and intrigue you with its enormity, its fascinating engineering design, and
its beautiful interior.
